Christmas is synonymous of celebrations, family meals, good time and winter (in most parts fo the world). In Catalonia we celebrate christmas a little different. One of the most important christmas celebrations is the feast of San Esteban, which is the 26th of December.

Here we introduce some of the things we do, buy and eat in December in Barcelona:

1. Caga Tio

CagatioIt is very common in Catalonia make a big dinner on Christmas Eve, but the important thing tonight is to make the Caga tio ‘shit’. The Caga tio is a log of wood, which is covered with a blanket or cloth and kids hit him singing a typical song. Then the tió ‘shits’ gifts, toys, candy, nougat … This is the alternative to Santa Claus, but also a way to receive gifts twice … 🙂

2. Galets for Christmas

According to Catalan traditions it is not typical to eat very much on Christmas Eve, instead it is a tradition to eat ‘Escudella i carn d’olla’, a soup with galets, a pasta with a special form.

3. Canelones by San Esteban

The Canelones are mare from the leftovers of Christmas and are eaten the day after christmas!

This are some of the typical things we eat and do in Christmas. Come an visit Amistat Beach Hostel during christmas to try some of these traditional dishes!
